Friend

"One friend in a life is much; two are many; three are hardly possible." Most of us have several so called "friends." How many of our friendships are dependent upon social position or financial status? If we were able to openly reveal our insecurities and prejudices, we would probably loose contact with many we consider friends. You see, some of us believe that if a friend gets into trouble, or falls into sin, he/she must be dropped, lest our reputations be spoiled. Also, if a friend ask to often for a favor, or fail to reciprocate adequately, or should not call us often enough, the relationship could be jeopardized.

Everybody needs a friend like Samwise Gamgee.

Events of March 6th and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien

Events: Aragorn overtaken by the Dunedain in the early hours. Theoden sets out from the Hornburg for Harrowdale. Aragorn sets out later.

J.R.R. Tolkien was one of the twentieth century's most prolific letter writers. Over the years he wrote a mass of correspondence - to his publishers, to his family, and to fans of his books - which records the history and composition of his works and his reaction to subsequent events.

By turns thoughtful, impish, scholary, impassioned, playful, vigorous, and gentle, Tolkien poured his heart and mind into a great stream of letters to intimate friends and unknown admires all over the world. From this collection one sees a mind of immense complexity and many layers - artistic, religious, charmingly eccentric sentimental and ultimately brilliant.

Events of March 3rd and Sir Gawain and the Green knight, Pearl, Sir Orfeo

Events: Theoden retreats to Helms Deep. Battle of the Hornburg begins. Ents complete destruction of Isengard.

Sir Gawain and the Green knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo are masterpieces of a remote and exotic age - the age of chivalry and wizards, knights and holy quests. Yet it is only in the imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien that the language of these stories comes to life for modern readers in these masterful and compelling translations by Tolkien.

My Favorite Things (sung to "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music)

Raindrops in Ent-beards
And whiskers on wizards
Bright Rings of Power
And boiled Orc-gizzards
Black-mantled Nazgul
Who're owned by their Rings
These are a few of my favorite things

Hobbits on ponies
And lembas with noodles
Gollum, and Gimli
And oodles and oodles
Of heated discussions
About Balrog wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white armor
Who fight in the masses
Mad old Denethor
Who burns into ashes
Rohirrim warriors
That fight while they sing
These are a few of my favorite things

When the knife bites when Shelob stings
When I' feeing sad
I simply remember My favorite things
and then I don't feel so bad
